The other day, during my morning walk, I stumbled across this piece of paper that was on the ground. I initially walked past it, but since it had "called" me, I just had to double back and pick it up. After I read it, I understood why it had politely summoned me. It wanted me to read and reread a line, that very last line, which was a quote by Dr. Maya Angelou, "I'm most happy to be a writer." This sentence spoke to me because I am exactly that - most happy to be a writer. But after I self-published my first book, I realized that I had "to be" more than a writer. For me to reach my goal of getting Sule the Proverb Detective into the hands of children around the world, I also had "to be" a businesswoman. This has been challenging for me, and I feel as though I’ve tried, stumbled, and failed miserably. But one thing I don’t do and won’t do is give up. Giving up is just not in me (I’m a true Taurus). So, starting now, I’m going to figure out a way to make the business part of writing work. Because yes, I am most happy to be a writer. And to expand on Dr. Angelou’s words, I am most happy to be a writer whose work reaches and positively impacts children around the world.
